OUR VERDICT - Now we aren't being lazy ( Maybe a little bit ) As you read on you may find that our verdict is the same for all the Acoustic Energy AE100 series speakers whether its the AE100, AE109 or AE120. That's because AE have made the tonality of the speaker exactly the same through the range the only thing that changes is how big the sound is. A good comparison would be a Mercedes Benz C Class, they all have the same body and spectacular performance but as you step up from the C220 CDI to the C63 AMG Black all aspects of performance are bigger and better.
If you were thinking small speakers mean a small sound, you’d be wrong. When combined with the supremely capable and entertaining Audiolab 6000A & 6000CDT you will have a system that is sure to entertain for years to come.
The pre loaded cabinet produces a surprisingly expansive and spacious presentation that wouldn’t be out of place from rivals twice the size. There’s a good amount of precision here and the low end is supremely taught, agile and surprisingly deep. The presentation stays stable even when the music becomes demanding.
We start with Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and the Acoustic Energy AE 120 sound way bigger than expected, delivering a sense of authority and solidity totally out of keeping with their size. With eyes closed we would never guess the speakers are so small.
The AE's presentation is wonderfully cohesive, the three drivers integrating seamlessly, and the sound is appealingly robust. Dynamics are strong too, with larger-scale dynamic shifts handled with confidence even at higher volumes.
Moving onto Stevie Wonder’s Superstition shows off the Acoustic Energy AE120's excellent handling of rhythms. It’s surefooted, and communicates the drive of the music superbly.
There’s plenty of attack here, yet enough in the way of insight and refinement to keep us happy. Stevie’s distinctive vocals come through with clarity and passion, while the hard-charging instrumentation is organised well - THOROUGHLY RECOMMENDED
AWARD WINNING HERITAGE
As a flagship, the new AE120 is the largest model in the 100 series range and a true 3-way design. The speaker offers a big sound from a slimline enclosure, tastefully styled to blend into a wide range of domestic environments. Two dedicated bass drive units underpin the room filling performance with a dedicated mid-range driver housed in its own enclosure, carefully designed to mitigate the harmful effects of rear wave reflections. Integrated within the perfectly matched Wide Dispersion Technology (WDT) waveguide, AE’s 25mm soft dome tweeter manages the high frequencies with controlled dispersion, high sensitivity and low distortion.
Like the AE100 standmount speaker, the driver and crossover are housed within a substantial 18mm MDF cabinet that takes styling cues from the award winning Reference Series. The result is an audio product with clean and uncluttered lines that can still deliver the thrilling and powerful presentation that Acoustic Energy owners have come to expect. Satin black and walnut vinyl veneer finishes are available.
True 3 Way Design
The 3-way crossover is impedance compensated to avoid the resonance issues which would otherwise slow bass delivery and colour mid-range performance. Particular attention has also been paid to the phase and time alignment for optimum integration and soundstage. The result is a loudspeaker offering smooth, wide dispersion high frequencies with a clean mid-range and lightning fast bass. The inert cabinet enclosure is constructed from 18mm MDF and like it’s smaller AE109 brother, supplied mass loaded to help dampen cabinet vibrations. The internal bracing system has been carefully tuned to reduce cabinet resonances and mid-range colouration, whilst the new AE120 benefits from a subtlety styled, discrete satin black plinth to aide stability, further improving dynamics and stereo focus.

Having lived with my old hifi system for several years I decided it was time for a change and I am so glad that I did. The difference between these acoustic energy speakers and my old ones is night and day. When paired with my new audio lab amp and CD player I am hearing music like it was the first time. Plenty of bass and detail in voices from quite a small speaker.
