5 Star Review.
OUR VERDICT - Now we aren't being lazy ( Maybe a little bit ) As you read on you may find that our verdict is the same for all the Acoustic Energy AE100 series speakers. That's because AE have made the tonality of the speaker exactly the same through the range the only thing that changes is how big the sound is.
If you were thinking small speakers mean a small sound, you’d be wrong. When combined with the supremely capable and entertaining Audiolab 6000A & 6000CDT you will have a system that is sure to entertain for years to come.
The pre loaded cabinet produces a surprisingly expansive and spacious presentation that wouldn’t be out of place from rivals twice the size. There’s a good amount of precision here and the low end is supremely taught, agile and surprisingly deep. The presentation stays stable even when the music becomes demanding.
We start with Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and the Acoustic Energy AE 109 sound way bigger than expected, delivering a sense of authority and solidity totally out of keeping with their size. With eyes closed we would never guess the speakers are so small.
The AE's presentation is wonderfully cohesive, the three drivers integrating seamlessly, and the sound is appealingly robust. Dynamics are strong too, with larger-scale dynamic shifts handled with confidence even at higher volumes.
Moving onto Stevie Wonder’s Superstition shows off the Acoustic Energy 109 excellent handling of rhythms. It’s surefooted, and communicates the drive of the music superbly.
There’s plenty of attack here, yet enough in the way of insight and refinement to keep us happy. Stevie’s distinctive vocals come through with clarity and passion, while the hard-charging instrumentation is organised well - THOROUGHLY RECOMMENDED
AWARD WINNING HERITAGE
The AE109 is designed to offer effortless, room filling performance from a slimline floorstanding loudspeaker in much the same way the world acclaimed original AE109 did 20 years ago. To do this, two 110mm drivers utilising an ultra high force motor system are used in partnership with a 25mm soft dome tweeter. The 2.5 way crossover features a unique topology allowing integration and power handling previously unachievable from this type of speaker. Particular attention has been paid to the phase and time alignment for the most cohesive performance possible.
Like the AE100 standmount speaker, the driver and crossover are housed within a substantial 18mm MDF cabinet that takes styling cues from the award winning Reference Series. The result is an audio product with clean and uncluttered lines that can still deliver the thrilling and powerful presentation that Acoustic Energy owners have come to expect. Satin black and walnut vinyl veneer finishes are available.
